Welcome to the Writing Center Online

The Portland State University Writing Center is a lovely venue in which trained professional consultants and staff provide nonjudgmental, collaborative support to students, faculty, and community members in all stages of the writing process.

The services offered by the Writing Center are free and open to the public: you may bring in any writing project—academic or nonacademic, personal or professional.

The Writing Center Blog

Our writing consultants use The PDX Writer to show your hot little eyeballs the latest in Portland literary action, and the Writing Center blog to post writing hints, suggestions on how to deal with difficult assignments or writing challenges, and thoughts on issues we see often in the Writing Center. The blog also includes links to our online scheduling system and to our resource pages.

Anyone can schedule an appointment with a writing consultant, or participate in the specialized workshops and programs tailored to the diverse needs of PSU community members.

Publications

The Writing Center publishes Ways of Writing: A Guide to College Compositon and A Writer's Guide: Practical Strategies for Compositon. Both are available exclusively through the PSU Bookstore, where they are stored behind the textbook information desk.

Writing Resources

We also have a Resource Center where students and faculty have access to books on a variety of writing issues and topics as well as comprehensive files with handouts on common writing issues and questions. Our library includes:

  • Style Guides (APA, MLA, Chicago/Turabian, and general guides)
  • Grammar Handbooks
  • Discourse guides for writing within specific disciplines
  • Research Guides
  • Books to help with resumes, cover letters, admissions essays, etc.
  • Business, legal, and technical manuals
  • A wide variety of books and journals for writing instructors

The Writing Center Resource Center is a designated study area and is available without an appointment.
